Wine and Weight Loss? Study Claims Drinking Red Wine Helps Shed the Pounds

If you thought that your beloved Cabernet Sauvignon had to be shelved while you were on a diet, think again.

red wine weight loss

One study claims that consuming wine – particularly before bed – can be a weight loss aid. But how much wine you drink is key. With science backing up the consumption of red wine for losing weight, you might still be able to enjoy your favorite wine while dieting and see the results you want.

According to a study conducted by researchers at Washington State University last year, red wine consumption actually plays a role in weight loss. That’s all because of a substance in red wine called resveratrol, which was shown to help turn hard-to-lose fat – otherwise known as “white fat” – into more easily burned-off fat, known as ”beige fat.”

An earlier study from Harvard Medical School that took place over a 13-year time span also showed the role that resveratrol in red wine plays in weight loss. According to the study that followed 20,000 women, those who drank a couple of glasses of red wine per day reduced their risk of obesity by as much as 70%.

The Time of Day Matters

Not only does the red wine itself help dieters lose weight, the time of day that it is consumed at also plays a part. An earlier study discovered that enjoying a glass of red wine at night was especially helpful with Adele weight loss efforts. That’s because sipping on wine helps to take the edge off late-night snack cravings, further helping with weight loss.

As if its role in lowering your weight wasn’t enough reason to tip your glass, consider the fact that moderate red wine consumption also helps reduce the onset of heart disease and type 2 diabetes

Everything in Moderation

Before you indulge in a glass of Pinot Noir, keep in mind the amount that you are actually drinking. One or two glasses a night is fine, but any more than that has the opposite effect on weight loss, and overall health in general.

Not only will you be packing on the calories (which will ultimately lead to weight gain), drinking too much wine right before bed will likely leave you feeling hungover the next day. To reap the benefits of red wine on your health and weight loss efforts, make sure to stick with a glass or two to help curb your hunger pangs, aa well as help you unwind.
