Perfect thigh gaps do not exist. I don’t care what anyone is trying to sell you. It’s bullshit. Thighs are beautiful whether they are skinny, muscular, or thick. As long as you are active and healthy, the size of your thighs and whether they touch or not shouldn’t matter.
What are thigh gaps?
Thigh gaps were invented after the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which featured several models with thin thighs that became the new ideal body type on “thinspiration” blogs and social media.
In 2013, Camile Hugh, a so-called fitness blogger and trainer, published the book The Thigh Gap Hack that was featured on the Dr. Oz Show. Just like any pseudo-health magic pill that gets featured on Dr. Oz, it became the next big thing. The book is poorly written with major spelling and grammar errors and isn’t backed by any scientific studies. Don’t waste your money on it.
The thigh gaps movement and the book was designed to feed into young girls’ and women’s obsession with obtaining the perfect body and feeling that they are inadequate. Like we don’t get that enough in the media already…

Why Thigh Gaps are BS
Yes, some women have thigh gaps, but most don’t. Remember that old “nature vs. nurture” debate you probably had in your high school biology class? That same concept applies here. Your potential for thigh gap is based mainly on your genetics. Your body type, pelvic structure, and tendon length all determine whether you see daylight between your thighs.
Body Type
There are three different body types: ectomorphs, mesomorphs, and endomorphs. Ectomorphs are naturally thin people who have a hard time putting on muscle or fat. Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen, and Victoria Beckham are all ectomorphs.
Endomorphs naturally carry more muscle and fat in their bodies. They can easily put on muscle or fat without too much effort. Celebrity endomorphs include Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, and Kate Winslet.
Mesomorphs fall somewhere in the middle. They tend to be the more “athletic” type with naturally muscular and lean bodies. Madonna, Jennifer Garner, and Halle Berry are all mesomorphs.
Of course, not everyone will fall into these three categories. Most people will naturally have qualities from at least two of these body types. Ectomorphs are the most likely women to have thigh gaps and they are quite rare.
Pelvic Structure
What is a thigh gap, really? Just like your body, there are several different pelvic structure types. No two pelvises are alike. The shape of your hips, like the width and depth of its sockets and the angle of your femur bone, can absolutely affect whether you have a thigh gap or not. Some women just naturally have wider hips. You can’t change your skeleton, can you?
Tendon Length
If body type and pelvic structure aren’t enough for you, the length of your adductors and tendons can also affect your natural ability to have a thigh gap. Your inner thigh is composed of three muscles: the Gracilis, Adductor Magnus, and Adductor Longus.
Tendons connect muscles to bone. So, if you have a short tendon, the meaty part of your adductor muscle might be higher up on your thigh making your inner thighs touch. In contrast, if you have longer tendons, you may achieve a thigh gap naturally.
Why You Should Focus on Strong Thighs
Women deal with enough body image issues and thigh gaps shouldn’t be one of them. If you have a thigh gap, great! If you don’t, that’s great, too! If you ask any woman which body part she would most like to change, it’s probably her thighs. If you really want to achieve a thigh gap, you can lose 15 pounds in a month with this diet to get quick results.
Since it’s next to impossible to change your bone or muscle structure, the best thing you can do is change your focus. Strong thighs are hip (see what I did there?). Squat and lunge as much as you want at the gym. Feel the burn in your quads and hamstrings today. You know what they say… “strong is the new skinny.”
There is no such thing as a perfect thigh gap. Whether you can see daylight between your thighs or not, it doesn’t matter. Thighs of all sizes are beautiful.
